CURNONSKY

5 January 2018

A journalist and a writer, his real name was Maurice Edmond Sailland. Following the suggestion of Alphonse Allais, he attached to himself this nickname of Cur Non (meaning why not in Latin), just adding to it the Slavonic suffix SKY to meet the trend of the time turned into a new fashion resulting from the then recent Franco–Russian alliance. In 1921, a strong defender of French traditional lands and cuisines heritage, he undertakes, together with his faithful accomplice Marcel Rouff, a “Tour de France”, just dedicated to gastronomy. After seven years of peregrinations and 27 volumes of a skilful and civilizing work he named Gastronomic France, he was nicknamed the “Prince of Gourmets” by an assembly of gourmets and renown master chefs, including August Escoffier. Until now, nobody, even recently the gourmet journalist Mr. Petitrenault, could ever succeed him!
