GASTRONOMY
The word gastronomy was not quite used until the 19th century. Joseph de Berchoux, a poet, was the one who made the word fashionable in 1800 when he printed a poem called: “Gastronomy or the farmer as his own dining table guest”. It was so successful that his work was re-edited several times. Grimod de la Reynière and Brillât Savarin drew some inspiration from it without giving Berchoux any credit for it. After all he was just a poet! Whatever the circumstances, according to Brillât Savarin, gastronomy “is the thought out knowledge of everything related to man as long as it concerns his eating habits”; for Littré, it is simply “the art to eat well”.
